Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea

Experience a true, traditional afternoon tea!

Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter, and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. Today we are proud to continue with this tradition with a twist of Hummingbird Tearooms’ creativity

Afternoon tea is now the most fashionable way to catch up with friends. It has become increasingly popular be it after a busy morning’s shopping, a business meeting, for that special family occasion, a romantic date, or a truly memorable experience for the bride to be and her girlfriends. Modern life can be very hectic and demanding and taking afternoon tea is the perfect way to slow down and relax, bringing huge emotional and wellbeing benefits.

A Centuries Old Tradition

Taking Tea in the afternoon has been enjoyed since the early 19th century. The Duchess of Bedford is credited to inventing it to fill the long gap between luncheon and dinner. At Hummingbird Tearoom & Bakery our dainty sandwiches are freshly made; the miniature cakes are handmade at our bakery, the scones are served warm with strawberry jam & our own in-house clotted cream.
